Lembit 4 President

Lembit Opik in Glasgow to support Liberal Democrat students

7.18.52pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd Sep 2008

Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik visited Glasgow University Liberal Democrats this evening as part of his campaign to be Party President.

He said:

"I understand after 17 years on the party's ruling body, which the President chairs, how the party works. Having visited more than 200 constituencies I also understand and share the aspirations of our members to be a party of government.

"In the last 12 months, I have played a key role in ensuring decisions are taken faster within the Party, making its structures more robust.

"There is more to do and with the President acting as Chief Engineer to the Captain of the ship, in this case our Leader Nick Clegg, I believe along with Vince Cable we have a winning combination.

"My track record speaks for itself and I will continue to provide a link for the membership to the party hierarchy and ensure our messages can be communicated more effectively.

"I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible over the next few weeks and listening to their views form the grassroots about how we can ensure the maximum number of MPs after the next general election."

Sophie Hall, Chair of Glasgow University Liberal Democrats said:

"This is our first meeting of the new academic year and it's a real boost for us to have Lembit here. Everyone is really excited about his visit and it's our pleasure to welcome him."

Lembit will travel to Glenrothes tomorrow (Wednesday) to campaign with Liberal Democrat candidate Harry Wills for the forthcoming by-election.
